Understanding Self-Harm in Adolescents

Self-harm—also called non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)—refers to the deliberate act of causing physical harm to oneself, often as a way to regulate intense emotional distress. This might include cutting, burning, hitting, scratching, or other forms of self-injury. While it may seem counterintuitive to someone on the outside, self-harm often serves as a release or temporary relief from emotional pain, numbness, shame, or self-criticism.

It’s important to understand that self-harm is not simply “attention-seeking” or a phase your teen will outgrow. It is usually a sign of deeper psychological distress, and without proper intervention, it can escalate into more serious mental health conditions or lead to accidental injuries. Recognizing the warning signs and seeking early support is critical.

At Beachside Teen, we approach self-harm as a symptom, not an identity. Every teen who comes to us is seen as a whole person, not defined by their behaviors.

Our Approach to Self-Harm Treatment

We know that healing from self-harm doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, trust, and the right therapeutic environment. Our adolescent self-harm treatment in Los Angeles is rooted in clinical excellence and emotional safety. We don’t just focus on stopping the behavior—we focus on helping teens understand why they’re self-harming in the first place and teach them practical, healthy alternatives.

Treatment plans are personalized to meet each teen’s unique needs and may include:

  • Individual Therapy: Focused sessions using evidence-based modalities like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Group Therapy: Peer-led sessions where teens explore shared experiences, build empathy, and learn interpersonal skills.
  • Family Therapy: Support for parents and caregivers to rebuild trust, communication, and healthy boundaries within the home.
  • Creative Expression: Art, music, and movement therapies that offer non-verbal ways to process emotions and explore identity.
  • Mindfulness and Stress Management: Yoga, meditation, and somatic practices that help teens regulate emotions and feel safe in their bodies again.

Above all, we emphasize connection, emotional safety, and consistency—three pillars that are vital for adolescents navigating mental health crises.

Self-Harm Treatment Programs in Los Angeles

Beachside Teen offers several levels of care for adolescent self-harm treatment in Los Angeles, depending on the severity of your teen’s symptoms, their risk level, and their overall mental and emotional needs. Across all levels of care, our treatment programs are trauma-informed, LGBTQ+ affirming, and developmentally appropriate. We work closely with parents and guardians every step of the way.

Residential Treatment

Our residential treatment program is designed for teens who need 24/7 support in a safe and structured environment. It’s ideal for those at higher risk of injury or suicide, or for teens whose symptoms are significantly interfering with daily functioning. During their stay, teens participate in daily therapy, educational support, and therapeutic activities tailored to their treatment goals.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is a step down from residential care and provides full-day treatment while allowing teens to return home in the evenings. This level of care is best for adolescents who are stable enough to be at home but still require intensive therapeutic support throughout the day.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our IOP offers a more flexible schedule with fewer hours per week, making it ideal for teens transitioning out of higher levels of care or those whose self-harming behaviors are less acute but still require consistent treatment. IOP helps adolescents maintain progress while reintegrating into school and home life.

How We Address Adolescent Self-Harm

At Beachside Teen, we believe in addressing the root of self-harming behaviors, not just the surface symptoms. Many adolescents who engage in self-harm struggle with emotional dysregulation, perfectionism, identity confusion, trauma, or untreated mental health conditions like depression or anxiety.

We never use shame-based approaches. Instead, we create a supportive space where teens feel heard, respected, and empowered to take steps toward recovery.

We focus on:

  • Building emotional resilience: Teaching teens to tolerate distress, manage triggers, and shift negative thought patterns.
  • Enhancing communication: Helping teens learn to express themselves verbally and ask for help when they’re overwhelmed.
  • Developing self-worth: Encouraging healthy identity development, self-compassion, and autonomy.
  • Reducing isolation: Creating opportunities for peer connection, positive mentorship, and community engagement.

Signs a Teen May Be Self-Harming

As a parent, you may not always recognize the signs of self-harm right away. Teens often go to great lengths to hide their injuries or explain them away. It’s important to pay attention to both physical and emotional cues, including:

  • Unexplained cuts, bruises, burns, or scratches
  • Wearing long sleeves or pants even in hot weather
  • Bloodstains on clothing or bedding
  • Sharp objects found in personal belongings
  • Withdrawing from family and friends
  • Frequent mood swings, irritability, or emotional numbness
  • Low self-esteem or frequent expressions of self-hatred
  • Refusal to talk about emotions or experiences

If you notice these warning signs, your teen may benefit from adolescent self-harm treatment in Los Angeles. Early intervention can prevent deeper emotional wounds and support your child’s long-term well-being.
